KNOW THE LOCATION

Chester is a city in northwest England that was founded in the first century A.D. as a Roman fortress. It is well-known for its extensive Roman walls constructed of local red sandstone. The Rows is a shopping district in the old city distinguished by 2-level covered arcades and Tudor-style half-timber buildings. A Roman amphitheatre is being excavated just outside the old city walls.

Transport

Rail: Trains on the Mersey rail Wirral Line are operated by Mersey rail Electrics, while other trains are operated by Transport for Wales. The Mersey Railway Tunnel connects the majority of Wirral (between 4 and 6 trains per hour) to Ellesmere Port, Chester, and Liverpool. The Borderlands rail line, on the other hand, runs hourly services from Wrexham to Bidston.

Bus: Merseytravel coordinates buses and bus passes in Wirral in collaboration with private bus operators, the main operators being Stagecoach and Arriva. Merseytravel is also in charge of the borough's bus stations and shelters. Buses account for 8 out of every 10 public transportation journeys in Merseyside, amounting to 136.7 million journeys per year. Every day, 100,000 people take the bus to work, and another 60,000 young people take the bus to school or training.

Ferry: Wirral is also served by a commuter shuttle ferry service from Seacombe to Pier Head in Liverpool, as well as a tourist 'daily explorer' ferry service that stops at Woodside in Birkenhead. Every year, 450,000 to 500,000 passengers board the daily explorer ferry, outnumbering the equivalent commuter service by a factor of three. 9 Merseytravel heavily subsidises the operation of the Ferry Service and the terminals at Seacombe and Woodside.

Leisure

When it comes to things to do in Wirral, you'll find a wide variety of historic sights and activities. One of the oldest and most historic buildings on Merseyside, Birkenhead Priory was built in 1150 and has been restored to its former splendour.

Port Sunlight Village is another must-see historic site. Lord Leverhulme envisioned this unusual 19th-century garden village, which is home to more than 900 historically significant structures that were initially constructed to accommodate his soap manufacturing employees. Take a ride on the world-famous Mersey Ferries, which offer both commuter and leisure services on the River Mersey to Liverpool, as well as intriguing canal cruises. Every ferry port offers a unique feature to keep the whole family entertained or occupied.
