Merseyside is a metropolitan and ceremonial county in northwest England, with a population of 1.38 million. It is surrounded by metropolitan areas centred on both banks of the lower reaches of the river Mersey Estuary. Merseyside also comprises five metropolitan boroughs:

Merseyside, which was formed in April 1974, takes its name from the River Mersey and sits within the historic counties of Lancashire and Cheshire.
Education
There are around 20 primary schools including, the Centre for Research in Primary Science & Technology - a major national & international centre for research in Primary Science. And approximately 30 schools for secondary education. Merseyside also has nine colleges and two major universities, which are the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moors University.
Transportation
The transportation facilities in Merseyside ensure that most places are covered by public transport, including hospitals, schools, colleges and universities, areas of employment, shopping centres, leisure spots, etc. through road, rail, ferries and tunnels.
